Regional Workshop on Climate Change Mainstreaming Capacity Building for Water Resources Management Strategies and Action Plans Formulation Sharm El Shiekh, Egypt 16-18 November 2014

15 Jul 2018

Water Scarcity is a major challenge for the sustainable development of the Arab countries. Climate change exerts more stress on the sustainable water management in most areas of the Arab region. Lack of capacities for development and implementation of water action plans and strategies also exists. Accordingly, the water security of the Arab region is threatened and correspondingly affecting the food security and regional security of the whole region.

Background

Water Scarcity is a major challenge for the sustainable development of the Arab countries. Climate change exerts more stress on the sustainable water management in most areas of the Arab region. Lack of capacities for development and implementation of water action plans and strategies also exists. Accordingly, the water security of the Arab region is threatened and correspondingly affecting the food security and regional security of the whole region.

The existence of water resources actions plans and strategies at national levels is not available in all Arab countries. Climate change should be mainstreamed in water resources management in all action plans and strategies. Most probably, the existing/available water resources management strategies did not include possible climate change impacts due to the lack of accurate estimations of the climate change impacts and studies on the water resources at national levels. There are some current initiatives such as Regional Initiative for the Assessment of the Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR) fill in the knowledge gap of climate change projects and impacts.

A new cooperation platform between UNESCO Cairo and GIZ entitled: “Transformative capacity building for water security in response to water scarcity of the Arab region and adapting to climate change and climate variability” is under investigation and preparation. It aims at strengthening capacities for water security through formulation and implementation of adequate water resources management strategies and action plans at country and regional levels taking into consideration the possible climate change impacts on the water resources of the Arab region. This cooperation is expected to deliver/produce “Capacity building toolkit on Water resources management strategies and action plans formulation”.

Accordingly, a regional workshop will be organized, in joint collaboration with ISESCO, ALECSO, GIZ, Arab Water Council and the Arab G-Wadi Network Secretariat-Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources of Oman in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt during the period 16-18 November 2014. The workshop will include a number of keynote lectures, country presentations and working group sessions.

Objectives:

Enhance knowledge about the Arab region gaps and priorities towards building Arab capacities for formulating water strategies and action plans at national level.
