Introduction /

In accordance with the Network`s statute and in cooperation between the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources (Bureau of the Network Secretariat) and the UNESCO Cairo Office, the Third Meeting of the General Assembly of the Arab Network for Water Resources Management in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions was held on Tuesday, 19th of September 2017 in Muscat, Oman. Acknowledgement was presented to the Sultanate of Oman, the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources, Oman National Committee for the Education, Culture and Science, Oman National Committee for the International Hydrology Program, the Arab Network Secretariat for Water Resources Management in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions for their hospitality and good organization.

Themes /

After taking the report of the General Secretariat of the Network and the interventions of the Assembly members and the participants, the following topics were discussed:

- Emphasize that the strength and effectiveness of the network lies in the interaction and activity of its members and the extent of their contribution and institutional and personal initiatives in the implementation of programs.

- The importance of developing a plan of action for the network regularly through which to focus on topics of interest to the Arab region.

- The network activities should not be limited to training and rehabilitation, despite its importance, through workshops, but members should also promote the exchange of knowledge, experience and opinions on water resource management issues in the Arab region, which may be of interest to some countries.

- The importance of using the latest e-communication means among the members.

- Updating and developing the website of the network to define the activities of the network as well as e-communication between members.

Recommendations / After discussions and opinions on the topics and challenges that the Network may face in advancing the objectives for which it was established, the General Assembly adopted the following recommendations:

Recommendation 1 / The priorities of the Arab Network for Water Resources Management in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions during the coming period will be:

Water-related disasters and hydrological changes

? Flood wadis and preventing the floods risks.

? Climate change and its impact on water resources.

The second topic

Groundwater in a changing environment

? Groundwater protection

? Traditional knowledge in water management

? Artificial groundwater recharge

The third topic

Treatment of water scarcity and quality

? Integrated and sustainable water resources governance.

? Improving water use efficiency

? The link between water, food and energy

? Rainwater harvest

The fourth topic

Water and human settlements in the future

? Treated water and the importance of its use.

? Integrated water planning and management.

? Treatment and desalination of water by renewable energies.

? Safety of drinking water.

The fifth topic

Ecological hydrology: - Achieving engineering harmony for a sustainable world.

The sixth topic

Education in Water Sphare

? Improving water use behaviors.

? Water awareness.

Recommendation 2 / Emphasize the need to work on the approved topics and areas of focus through the building of human capacity and development of knowledge capacities and linking the Arab specialized competencies using appropriate mechanisms and the network Secretariat shall develop and follow up an appropriate plan of action.

Recommendation 3 / Emphasize the role of network members in supporting the network secretariat in terms of providing scientific materials, studies or online links and assisting the network in securing financial resources to support its activities.

Recommendation 4 / Renewing the election of Eng. Nasser Bin Humaid Al Hosani as the General Coordinator of the Arab Network for the next two years.

Recommendation 5 / Agreement to hold the next meeting of the General Assembly of the Arab Network in conjunction with the meeting of the National Committees of the Hydrological Program in Cairo, the headquarters of the Regional Office for Science in the Arab States during the last quarter of 2019 or the first quarter of 2020
